PETERSBURG, W.Va. – In a match between the teams with flawless records, Petersburg led at home against Hampshire (63-34) on Friday.

Jenna Burgess and Kym Minnich set the tone for the Vikings early, combining 15 of Petersburg’s 19 points in the first quarter to rise between 19 and 10 at the end of the quarter.

After their leadership, the rest of the squad is involved in the evaluation.

Six different players hit from the field in the second quarter – nine players ended the night with points for the Vikings – as Petersburg blew the game up 37:19 at halftime.

Petersburg prevailed after the break with 26:15 against Hampshire and set an exclamation point for the victory.

Hampshire crossed the finish line unbeaten with triumphs against Berkeley Springs, Washington and the Yellow Jackets. The Trojans’ most impressive success, however, was against Class AA No. 4 Frankfort, 50-48, at home.

The Vikings went into the night on a 3-0 record after defeating Keyser and taking home wins against Moorefield and Tucker County.

Minnich led Petersburg with 18 points on eight field goals and made 2 of 3 fouls. Burgess followed with 13 points on five field goals with 3 for 4 fouls.

For the Vikings, Kayla Lantz and Mickala Taylor each contributed seven points to the win, followed by Kennedy Kaposy with six points and Carley Turner and Braylee Corbin, both of whom scored four points.

Tristen Miller and Abby Alt also scored two points.

Hampshire’s best offensive player was Gracie Fields, who had 13 points on five field goals – one with 3 pointers – and shot 2 to 4 from the charity strip.

Jadyn Judy drilled two triples and made another two-pointer for eight points; Ellen Keaton made a trio of two for six points. Liz Pryor (3), Carisma Shanholtz (2) and Hannah Ault (2) finished the ranking for Hampshire.

Petersburg (4-0) will face East Hardy tomorrow at 7 p.m.

Hampshire (4-1) will face Keyser at home tonight at 7:30 p.m.

SHORT GAP – Two other goalscorers scored at least 15 points to add to Marié Perdew’s game high 26 when Frankfort beat Spring Mills (77-52) on Saturday.

The Falcons head coach Mike Miller had hoped Frankfort could help top scorer Perdew on the offensive.

Against the Cardinals, Perdew finally got it.

Halley Smith exploded for a 22-point bet, scoring eight field goals and 5 for 7 foul shots. She also had four assists and six steals.

Larae Grove contributed 15 points on four field goals, 7 for 10 from the charity strip, along with six steals and six rebounds.

Perdew scored her best on nine field goals and scored 5 out of 7 fouls. The junior achieved a team high with nine rebounds.

The Falcons were on the offensive from the start with 24 points in the first quarter against just 10 for Spring Mills.

After two relatively even periods – Frankfort won the second and third with 35:33 – the Falcons went into the fourth with 16 points before they retreated and won with 25.

Arin Lease almost scored a double-double for Frankfort with nine points and nine rebounds. Izzy Layton scored five points, grabbed five rebounds and distributed six assists.

The Spring Mills top scorer was Mya Griffin, who got 18 points and drilled four three points. Ella Jones was second in the squad with 11 points, followed by Ella Hawkins’ eight.

In the JV game, Spring Mills ousted Frankfort 36:31.

Keleigh Pownall (16) and Tory Henry (12) scored most of the score in the Cardinals win.

The hawks were driven up and down by Lilyan Mills, who scored seven points, and Veronica Vanmenter, who had six.

Frankfort (5-1) has a big test on the street against North Marion tonight at 7:30 p.m.
