The Shippensburg Greyhounds, (11-1, 7-0MPC), overcame a sluggish first quarterer that saw them score only seven points to ease past Northern York, 54-31, in Mid Penn Colonial action Wednesday night.

Greyhound head coach Ray Staver attributed the slow start to a couple of factors. “We took two-threes on our first possession’s and we are a team that attacks inside. They also started their two big kids which they had not done this season.”

Northern led, 5-1, before Erby Weller, scored the first Greyhound basket near the three-minute mark of the first quarter on an assist by Jeremy Thomas. Weller came off the bench to score a season high 14 points.

A bucket by Anthony Smith, who had 8 second quarter points, gave the Greyhounds their first lead of the night, 9-7, early in the second quarter.

Northern, (6-10, 4-6MPC), re-took the lead on a Zach French three point shot and led 14-13 when Weller hit the first of his two-three’s to put Shippensburg in the lead for good, 16- 14 The Greyhounds would stretch the lead to nine at halftime, 25-16.

Shippensburg maintained the lead between five and nine points for the third quarter until the final 43 seconds. The Greyhounds reeled off seven points to end the quarter up, 39-23. Weller hit his second three, Jayden Statum scored on a lay-up after a steal, and Smith finished the run with a steal and slam as the third quarter ended.

Coach Staver added, “That run changed the whole complexion of the fourth quarter.”

In addition to Wellers’ 14 points, Thomas also had 14, and Smith added 13 in the win.
