Spain’s tourism minister said he was “desperate” to welcome the British back for this year’s summer vacation and says things look promising if the country ramps up its vaccination program.

Minister Fernando Valdes has discussed how vaccination passports and certifications are vital to revitalizing tourism in Spain and hoped that travel corridors can be set up with the UK once both sides reach high levels of vaccination.

However, the Minister of Tourism was confident that something could change by the summer and stated that “safe travel” would be the most important thing for Spanish tourism.

Mr Valdes appeared on Sky News Thursday to discuss the UK government’s latest plans to introduce vaccination records for summer holidays.

People were hoping to book a summer vacation this year

The issue of the split has been debated by ministers since the beginning of the year in order to revive the tourism industry. A traffic light system for countries with the designations green, amber or red with corresponding travel restrictions is to be updated by May 17.

Speaking about the likelihood of Brits going to Spain this summer, Mr Valdes said: “We really want to see you this summer.

“And I think we will be ready here in Spain and we also think the vaccination program is going pretty well in the UK.”

Mr Valdes was then asked what should be done to safely reintroduce the trip and whether vaccination records play a role.

He replied, “I think certification will certainly help, since the beginning of the pandemic we have tried different means to make tourism safe.

“It is true that we have gone through some waves of this pandemic, but now I think we are ready because we have vaccines.

“Once we reach an agreement and have had ongoing discussions with the UK authorities, the certifications will help tourism this summer.”

What are the current rules for holidays in Spain?

It is currently illegal for UK residents to take non-essential travel (e.g. vacation) to Spain.

This will be reviewed by the government in the next few weeks, but the earliest date for the resumption of foreign holidays is May 17th.

The countries are divided into a traffic light system consisting of green, amber or red, which indicates different quarantine and test levels before and after vacation trips.

However, there is still no confirmation of which countries will be at which level of the system.
