The Sikkim Tourism Department and other regional institutions organize various festivals from time to time to showcase the natural beauty, culture, food and lifestyle. Many of the festivals are organized in lesser-known locations to give travelers a chance to visit these areas.

International Flower Festival, Gangtok

As one of Sikkim’s most popular festivals, the Flower Festival in the White Hall complex in Gangtok has achieved international status. At a time when spring is coming, orchids are one of the biggest attractions of this festival, along with the exhibition of alpine flowers, ferns and bamboo. The glass house in the flower exhibition center houses a flower show. Kiosks selling local groceries are also lined up in the area.

Sikkim Red Panda Festival

The festival, named after the state bull Sikkim, highlights the most important aspects of the state. From natural abundance to culture, from food to sports, from the hand loom to handicrafts and much more. Highlights include carnival parade, fashion shows, art and photo exhibitions, folk and pop music, folk dances, food festivals, exhibition and sale of organic products, etc.

When and where: December, Gangtok

Namchi Mahotsav

This festival usually takes place in October when the rain subsides and the sky turns blue. Cultural performances, including traditional dances by local artists, handloom and handicraft sales, sports tournaments and flower shows are some of the highlights of this three day festival.

Ravangla Festival

The motto of this five-day “Rabong Discovered” festival is Discover Rabong in the village of Ravangla in the south of Sikkim. In addition to the sale of handicrafts from Sikkim and other northeastern states of India and the neighboring country Bhutan, there are cultural programs, fashion shows, sporting events, etc. Visitors can also take advantage of package tours to nearby destinations.

Lampokhari Tourism Festival

Lampokhari (‘pokhari’ means lake) is considered one of the oldest natural lakes in Sikkim and is located in the village of Aritar. The lake is surrounded by green hills. A paved path surrounds the lake. The festival is usually organized during the time of Ram Navami. Popular activities during the festival include boating in the lake, horse riding, archery and short walks in the surrounding hills. Climbing and paragliding can also be arranged. Cultural and food festivals are also organized.

Manganese Music Festival

Manganese, the district headquarters of North Sikkim, is a popular stop on the way to the Lachung and Lachen valleys. The music festival is organized in winter to attract travelers to the region. Musical performances are the mainstay of the three-day festival, while locals set up kiosks selling local handicrafts and food.

Kanchendzonga Tourism Festival

This winter festival in Pelling, West Sikkim, mainly focuses on adventure sports such as trekking, mountain biking, white water rafting on the Rangit, etc. Traditional sports such as archery can also be organized. You can also take bird watching tours in the countryside. Flower exhibitions, food and handicrafts kiosks are also organized.

Hee-Bermiok Heritage & Tourism Festival

Located in a picturesque corner of West Sikkim, Hee Bermiok is a tiny hamlet. The festival is organized by the Hee-Bermiok Tourism Development Cultural and Heritage Conservation Society. Visitors can camp in Gufa Dara. In addition to traditional cultural programs, you can also try local cuisine, including beers.
