With travelers reluctant to travel internationally, the demand for UK domestic vacations is likely to unleash. The easing relief roadmap is moving rapidly and UK-based domestic operators will benefit, GlobalData says.

Gus Gardner, Associate Travel and Tourism Analyst at GlobalData, comments: “After months of a long, miserable winter, many Britons will find themselves desperate to flee, and domestic stays will return this year.

“Domestic operators will be prepared for a peak summer as domestic demand will return faster than international demand. GlobalData’s latest projections show that domestic demand will continue to rise in 2021, with visitor numbers only dropping 17% from 2019 – compared to outbound travel, which is projected to decrease 47.7% from 2019. The strong desire of the British to travel closer to home and the wealth of experiences on offer across the UK will help fuel a strong rebound in domestic travel this year and benefit the financial health of many tourism companies with a presence in the UK. “

A GlobalData survey found that 43% * of respondents will consider domestic travel in the next 12 months, up from the 30% who would not consider travel at all.

As a result of consumer reluctance to travel internationally, some international operators and agents have temporarily reduced or discontinued sales capacity. On the Beach has extended its sale period from June 30th to August 31st because the uncertainty is too high. At the beginning of this year, TUI also used part of its expected capacity and reduced its business activity in 2021 from 80% to 75% of the 2019 level, which in turn is due to the high level of uncertainty.

Sums up Gardner: “With operators placing their bets on a summer with high domestic demand and international travel seems uncertain for most this year, domestic holidays should be a boost to tourism in the UK.”
