Passengers traveling to Vancouver International Airport (YVR) on Monday afternoon are encouraged to plan ahead and allow additional travel time as a protest is planned around the airport.

Activist group Extinction Rebellion is planning a demonstration “to disrupt airport access” at 4:30 pm PT.

“The federal government needs to end fossil fuel subsidies immediately and we think this is one of the ways we can really get the government to pay attention,” said Zain Haq, an organizer of Extinction Rebellion.

A statement by the RCMP early Monday said traffic diversions and delays are possible. Travelers who want to catch departures should allow enough time before their scheduled flights.

Motorists are asked to watch out for pedestrian traffic and additional signage in the Templeton Street and Grant McConnachie Way areas.

“Additional resources are being allocated in the area today and we will work with local organizers to ensure that all protest activities are conducted safely in accordance with federal and state laws and that public safety measures in or around the airport are not compromised.” said RCMP.

On my own behalf opinion, YVR reiterated the advice for those driving to leave early. It is also said that those wishing to park can reserve a space online in advance. The airport authorities also recommended the Canada Line as another way of getting to the airport.
