Srinagar: After years of no tourist flows in the Kashmir Valley, the tourism industry here was for the first time in February full of confidence that this year they will see a huge influx of tourists.
However, optimism was largely dashed by a number of recent incidents, including the shooting at a restaurant in the Dalgate high-security zone in Srinagar, followed by another broad day shooting on the high-security road at Srinagar Airport in Bazullah, which was attended by two police officers were killed on the spot.
The frequency of shootings also increased in February, and there have been multiple shootings in the past two days in which three terrorists and one police officer have been killed. The government is keen to stop this trend and several high-level meetings have been held, including one on Saturday, to fill in the gaps so that violence is not consumed during this tourist season as well.
Vijay Kumar, Inspector General of Police (IGP) in Kashmir, told the media that after several brainstorming sessions, they had finalized a summer strategy to ensure a peaceful tourist season in Kashmir.
“It is not feasible to divulge the details of the meeting, but we will ensure that there is a peaceful summer and a good tourist season in Kashmir,” Vijay Kumar said at a press conference. The J&K government is concerned about the recent tweets from political leaders in the Kashmir Valley and is trying to control the situation in a way that does not encourage youth to choose violence. Vijay Kumar, Inspector General of Police (IGP) in Kashmir, said of the statements made by key political leaders: “We will not hesitate to prepare a dossier and, if necessary, action will be taken against them.”
