october 30—DANVILLE — Lukas Simpson and Austyn Holmes rushed for three touchdowns each as Brewer wrapped up its regular season with a 56-0 win over Morgan County foe Danville on Friday.

The Patriots (5-5) will open the Class 5A playoffs next week at Scottsboro.

Brewer’s offense dominated Danville, rolling up 459 yards of total offense. The Patriots rushed for 366 yards on 26 carries, while quarterback Caden Childers completed 6-of-10 pass attempts for 67 yards and a touchdown.

Simpson led the Patriots with 128 yards rushing on seven carries. Holmes carried the ball five times for 125 yards and Hunter Knighted ran three times for 59 yards and a score. Childers connected with Walker Latham on a touchdown pass and intercepted a pass on defense.

Gage Taylor led Danville with 55 rushing yards on 16 carries. Kade Taylor rushed for 48 yards on 13 carries and quarterback Benjamin Ellenburg finished with 58 yards of total offense.

—Athens 32, Russellville 31: Brogan Gross connected with Jay’shon Ridgle on an 11-yard touchdown pass with eight seconds to play in regulation to complete a 24-point comeback and propel Athens past Russellville in its season finale on Friday.

Russellville controlled the game early, leading 14-0 before Athens scored on a 35-yard touchdown run by Kameron Gatewood with 8:07 to play in the first half. Russellville added a pair of touchdowns in the second quarter to push the lead to 28-7 at halftime and scored on its first possession of the third quarter to extend the lead to 31-7.

The Golden Eagles responded with 25 straight points to pull out the victory.

Gatewood scored from two yards out to trim the lead to 31-13 with 4:12 to play in the third quarter. A 53-yard touchdown run by Ridgle pulled Athens to within two touchdowns and a 10-yard pass from Gross to Anthony Buiniskis cut the Russellville lead to 31-26 with 2:38 to play.

Athens finishes the season at 5-5. Russellville (6-4) will host Boaz in the opening round of the Class 5A playoffs next week.

In other games Friday involving local teams, Hanceville defeated East Lawrence 54-23 and St. John Paul II bested Elkmont 42-14.
