Chain and Traction Laws
Colorado traction law applies September 1 through May 31 on Interstate 70 from Dotsero to Morrison.See how to check your tire tread and types here
Traction right
According to the Colorado Department of Transportation, these are the rules:
During an active traction law, drivers must have one of the following:
- Winter tires
- Tires with the designation mud / snow (M + S)
- a four-wheel / four-wheel drive vehicle
The law, which came into force in August 2020, is aimed at drivers who drive on federal highways in the winter months.
Specifically, the required minimum tire profile for vehicles on snow-covered roads has been changed to 3/16 inches. According to the law, the minimum profile for dry roads is still 2/16 of an inch.
Motorists can also install chains or an alternative means of traction (like AutoSock) to comply with the law if their tires are insufficient.Harvest your garden before the cold spell
Car Chain Act
During severe winter storms, CDOT will implement a car chain law (also known as Code 16). This is the final safety measure before the motorway is closed.
If the Car Chains Act is in force, every vehicle on the road must have chains or an alternative means of traction (such as AutoSock).
Fines
Drivers who break the law could face fines in excess of $ 130. If a vehicle blocks the road for lack of proper equipment, the driver can expect a fine of more than $ 650.
CDOT serves as a useful resource for safe and legally compliant driving in winter.
