HIV vaccine at the center of a potential $ 785 million deal between Gilead, East Bay Biotech

An East Bay cancer drug company that raised its profile last month by working with Covid-19 vaccines announced today that it is working with HIV-fighting powerhouse Gilead Sciences Inc. on an experimental vaccine for AIDS Virus will work.

Emeryville-based Gritstone Oncology Inc. (NASDAQ: GRTS) could receive up to $ 785 million, including an upfront payment of $ 30 million and a $ 30 million equity investment from Gilead (NASDAQ: GILD) of Foster City.

How an East Bay biotech is applying its cancer know-how to a next-generation Covid vaccine

As potentially dangerous variants of Covid-19 emerge around the world – including a mutant that infiltrated a Kaiser Permanente emergency room in San Jose late last year – a biotech in East Bay outlined plans for a next-generation experimental coronavirus vaccine on Tuesday to fight novel forms of Covid-19 the virus.

Emeryville-based Gritstone Oncology Inc. (NASDAQ: GRTS) announced that it will be working with the National Institute for Allergies and Infectious Diseases on a two-stage Phase I clinical trial of a SARS-CoV-2 vaccine later this quarter will begin. This vaccine would not only break down the “spike” protein that allows the virus to enter cells, but also stimulate part of the immune system to provide a second layer of defense.

Eight hotels in the Bay Area will receive the new Sonesta flag

Service Properties Trust, a property-owned real estate investment trust, announced Friday that it was renaming eight of its Bay Area properties under the Sonesta flag to become Sonesta International Hotels Corp. for their management.

The Newton, Massachusetts (NASDAQ: SVC) company is converting the eight hotels in the region along with 80 others to its national portfolio. All hotels were previously labeled and managed by Marriott International.
