ALBANY – Governor Andrew Cuomo has signed a bill to pass the Housing Our Neighbors with Dignity Act (HONDA). The law paves the way for distressed hotels and other commercial properties for affordable housing.

The new legislation provides a mechanism for the state to finance the acquisition and / or conversion of distressed hotels and / or commercial office properties by the relevant non-profit organizations in order to maintain or increase affordable housing.

“Bringing empty buildings together with people in need of housing is common sense – there is no better way to renovate unused buildings than to turn them into thriving, safe and comfortable homes,” said Governor Cuomo. “Providing affordable housing to communities serves not only the residents of the houses, but the communities around them as well. We look forward to everything HONDA will do to serve the people of New York and I am proud to sign it. “

Housing created by HONDA will provide affordable permanent housing that meets safety, habitability and quality standards while providing residents with access to supporting services.
