By Thursday in front of City Hall and in Westport, buses began loading people and their belongings. The homeless now have shelter. “If you’re someone who is homeless and on the street, we have a place for you,” said Quinton Lucas, Kansas City mayor. The mayor said the offer was for people in one of the city’s 170 camps. The plan was the result of four days of talks with the chairman of the KC Homeless Union. “This is a nice first step. It is not the end. It is the first step in the beginning of solving or eliminating this problem,” said Gaddafi, leader of the KC Homeless Union. “Kansas City doesn’t have unique problems, but Kansas City can have unique solutions,” said Lucas. Hope Faith buses carried dozens of people. That means they have privacy, security and a warm shower. “COVID-19 vaccines, as you call it, ensure our fellow Kansas Citians have what they need to be successful,” said Jaysen Van Sickle, executive director of Hope Faith Homeless Assistance Campus. It’s an immediate change, although the permanent effects like jobs and long-term housing will take more time. “We will turn to all of our colleagues and just forgive and do what we can and honor what Mayor Lucas has promised,” said Van Sickle. The city will pay for the hotel rooms with money it has received from the federal government. The mayor introduced two more ordinances on Thursday to help the homeless. Ask for a full study of what prevents them from finding work. The second calls for the country to renovate 112 properties for people earning less than 30% of the median income.
