The Maharashtra government has decided to close all business on Sunday – the day of Ganesh Visarjan – throughout the city of Pune, Pune Canton and the rural areas of the district, said Deputy Prime Minister Ajit Pawar.

However, he said all restaurants and hotels would remain open. Other essential services have also been exempted from the curb.

Covid situation in the state

The new restrictions come against the backdrop that Maharashtra reported 3,595 new coronavirus cases and 45 deaths on Thursday, bringing the infection count to 65.11,525 and the death toll to 1,38,322, PTI news agency reported.

Up to 3,240 patients have been discharged from hospitals, bringing the number of recovered cases to 63,20,310. There are 49,342 active cases in the state.

2,89,425 people are in domestic quarantine and 1,908 in institutional quarantine. The recovery rate from Covid-19 in Maharashtra is 97.06% while the death rate is 2.12%.

Maharashtra, the second most coronavirus-hit state in the country, has five counties that contributed 70% of the state’s Covid cases over the past week. The five districts include Mumbai, Pune, Solapur, Sangli and Satara.

Maharashtra Government Guidelines for Ganeshotsav

The Maharashtra government had earlier this month forbidden physical darshan for the Ganesh festival and said that people are not allowed to visit the Ganesh pandas. Only online darshan television broadcasts from Pandals would be allowed.

The decision was made to discourage people from venturing and exposing themselves to Covid-19.

The Prime Minister of Maharashtra, Uddhav Thackeray, had said: “We can have festivals later. Let us prioritize the life and health of our citizens. The situation can get out of hand in daily cases given the increase. “

“Who wants to restrict festivals and religious programs? But people’s lives are important,” he said.

Thackeray said residents and the government should work to avoid a third wave of Covid-19.

The Prime Minister also said there were clear instructions to officials to fully prepare for such a crisis. He appealed to power and opposition parties to be more cautious and vigilant.
