Malaysia Extends Movement Control Orders Until May 17, 2021; The ban on international travel remains in place

Johor, Kuala Lumpur, Penang and Selangor will remain in the CMCO, while Sabah will switch from the RMCO to the CMCO over the same period. In the meantime, Melaka, Perlis, Putrajaya and more will continue to operate under the RMCO.

Malaysia has extended its Movement Control Regulations (MCO) for another two weeks until May 17, 2021. The ban on interstate travel will remain in place during this period, said senior minister (security cluster) Ismail Sabri.

Speaking of which at a press conference on Tuesday (April 27th) and quoted by New Straits TimesThe senior minister said this extension would apply to current orders as follows:

  • Johor, Kuala Lumpur, Penang and Selangor will remain under the Conditional MCO (CMCO) from April 29 to May 17, while Sabah will switch from the Recovery MCO (RMCO) to the CMCO for the same period.
  • The CMCO in Sarawak runs from April 27th to May 17th.
  • All colonies in Kelantan will remain under the MCO for the same period.
  • The RMCO in Kedah, Labuan, Melaka, Negeri Sembilan, Pahang, Perak, Perlis, Putrajaya and Terenggan will also continue through May 17.

Earlier this week, Johor Investment, Entrepreneurship, Cooperative and Personnel Committee chairman Datuk Mohd Izhar Ahmad said a study is ongoing to allow vaccinated Malaysians in Singapore to return to their hometown for aidilfitri. This “relaxation”, he noted, would include the provision of special Green Lane passes for these individuals.

Compulsory vaccination was one of the terms Malaysia and Singapore agreed in the talks to open the border, and so Johor will “hold on to it”. The Prime Ministers of both countries are expected to discuss this at the beginning of May. More about it here.

Finally, from today Malaysia has also imposed a ban on travelers from India. This includes restrictions on inbound flights from India, transit from India through Malaysia, admission of international students with Indian citizenship and international business visitors, and much more.
