The tides have turned on sustainable and eco-friendly travel with thousands of hotels around the world making a conscious effort to offer more earth-friendly accommodations and amenities that help to lessen travelers’ personal carbon footprints.

In fact, new research by British data comparison firm Uswitchanalyzed the eco-credentials of thousands of hotels across the world to discover how many eco-conscious hotels are available in each city—and it turns out that many Canadian cities are leading the way when it comes to eco-friendly and sustainable travel accommodations .

The results show that 44 percent of Vancouver’s hotels put sustainability at the forefront, Stockholm takes second place with 40 percent of its hotels being eco-conscious, and a myriad of other Canadian cities rounding out the top five. Vancouver, Canada

According to Uswitch, more than 44 percent of Vancouver’s 89+ hotels have been recognized for their eco-credentials with the five-start Fairmont Waterfront being the most noteworthy property. The luxury hotel is home to 250,000 honeybees, recycles and composts where possible, and encourages all event planners to use carbon-neutral alternatives.

Stockholm, Sweden

Stockholm ranks just below Vancouver with 87 of its 216 hotels having been recognized for their sustainability efforts. The Clarion Hotel Sign is famous for its sustainability efforts, with small but impactful policies: like carbon labeled menus and before plastic packaging.

Toronto, Canada

Toronto comes in third with nearly 25 percent of all hotels being recognized as sustainable. Some stand out options include the Shangri-La Hotel Toronto, the Fairmont Royal York Hotel, and the Hotel X Toronto.

Calgary, Canada

Calgary is fourth with over 23 percent eco-friendly options, including the Le Germain Hotel Calgary, the Calgary Marriott Hotel, and the Hyatt Regency Calgary.

Edmonton, Canada

Edmonton is the fourth Canadian city in the top five with 22.56 percent of its hotels being sustainable. The most eco-friendly offerings include the Fairmont Hotel MacDonald, the Matrix Hotel, and the Metterra Hotel on Whyte.
