HOUSTON – As Labor Day approaches, Shell Oil Co. is encouraging Americans to safely venture onto their own StateEscape. – a safe road trip vacation born out of a desire to get away without venturing too far from home.

Shell has launched a variety of travel resources for consumers planning to launch a StateEscape with services such as road trip planning materials, an interactive map, Spotify playlists, safety tips, and more. These resources can be found Here.

According to a recent survey conducted by The Harris Poll on behalf of Shell, consumers have pent-up demand for a StateEscape vacation due to canceled or postponed travel plans. Two-thirds of Americans (67 percent) say they want to vacation home due to the COVID-19 outbreak, and 61 percent say they’re now more interested in taking a local road trip to areas in the To explore proximity.

Pent-up desire to get out

Two-thirds of respondents (66 percent) say they would take an impromptu road trip and 36 percent say they are more likely to take a road trip now than they were before the COVID-19 outbreak.

Flexibility on the go

Sixty-one percent agree that working or attending classes practically means they can vacation or travel without having to devote time to work or school. Almost half (47 percent) are ready work as a passenger on a road trip.

Enjoy what’s local

Americans enjoy road trips because they allow them to listen to music (73 percent), stop, explore local attractions (55 percent), and catch up with other passengers (49 percent).

Not the summer of the “Staycation”

The “staycation” trend gained momentum during the last recession, but during the COVID-19 outbreak, Americans are looking for a way to get out of their home and reduce their stress levels. 69 percent say a road trip could help them escape the stress of COVID-19, and the majority (86 percent) think that traveling in a private car is much safer than taking a plane, train, or bus.

Vacation trip during COVID-19

Nearly three-quarters of Americans (73 percent) have recently canceled or postponed travel plans, and 69 percent haven’t gone on vacation at all. For those who dared: 22 percent traveled by car / private vehicle; 8 percent traveled as planned; and 6 percent traveled by train or bus.
