SPAIN will once again become a favorite destination for British vacationers this summer, as the country’s tourism leaders have predicted.

Tourism Minister Maria Reyes said two weeks ago that the country would open to international travelers from late spring.

And Spain’s Secretary of State for Tourism yesterday reiterated the idea that Britain’s favorite vacation spot will be back on the road to recovery by the summer.

Fernando Valdes told the Spanish daily Informacion from Costa Blanca: “We are doing everything we can to ensure that we have a decent summer from a health and tourist point of view.

“By the summer, we want a gradual recovery in international tourism, starting with our European neighbors.”

Insisting that the ‘sun and sand’ tourism model that has made Spain one of the world’s leading holiday destinations has a bright future ahead of it, he added: ‘Spain has a lot to offer in terms of diversity and heritage and we have to to further develop our range of tourist products to complement our sun and sand products.

“But it is and will continue to support the sun and sand tourism model, and this government will continue to support it.”

Great Britain has been Spain’s most important foreign tourism market for decades, after opening up to northern European vacationers as a sun and sea destination under the former dictator Francisco Franco.

Spain became the UK’s most popular holiday destination nearly 20 years ago.

In 2018, 18 million Brits chose Spain for their holidays, well above second and third-placed Germany and France with around 11 million tourists each.

Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez said last month that the country would become a “beacon of the resurrection of tourism”.

It also seemed to be signaling that Spain wouldn’t be able to open up to foreign tourists until the end of the summer, when 70 percent of its own population had received their Covid puffs.

His tourism minister was then more optimistic.

Mr. Valdes emphasized: “We are one of the eight EU countries with the highest Covid-19 vaccination rate and above countries like France and Germany.

“We still want at least 70 percent of the Spanish adult population to be vaccinated by summer.”
