ALBUQUERQUE, NM (KRQE) – Just before the summer travel season, New Mexico is starting a new partnership to promote tourism to the state. The states Tourism department works with the rental side, Airbnb, to Promote experiences and nearby lodging across the state.

“Airbnb is really expanding to include more experience sharing and is really more of a holistic information channel to discover and inspire travel. So this was just a unique opportunity to take advantage of their expansion and some of their information offerings to share a little more about New Mexico in new ways, ”said Cody Johnson, Public Information Officer for the Department of Tourism.

The campaign will promote New Mexico on social media and email. Because the state is divided into six regions, the campaign offers a curated list of experiences in each region and nearby Airbnbs in Silver city and The crosses, and experiences like Gila Clif Dwellings and a visit to a Hatch chilli farm. With hundreds of Airbnbs in the state, New Mexicans could benefit from renting on the site.

“Of course, hotels are attractive to a lot of people, as are short-term rentals and alternative accommodations offered through platforms like Airbnb,” said Johnson. “So all of these lodging options certainly play a role in our tourism economy and help bring people into the state, and we recognize that and it is certainly a benefit to the larger tourism ecosystem.”

In addition to promoting the state, the campaign will highlight New Mexico’s Safe Promise campaign to encourage visitors to follow COVID safe practices during their visit to the state.

“There are companies trying to recruit, people you know who are starting new jobs, or being retrained in any new additional security procedures companies may implement… there may be extra waiting times. We just hope everyone is aware of where we are in the reopening phase and being polite and respectful as we continue to return to normal together, ”said Johnson.

The state said they were able to pause funding during the pandemic to explore “creative” partnerships like this one. In April, the New Mexico Tourism Department has redesigned its New Mexico True brand and the promotion of travel to the state resumed.
