The survey, launched on World Environment Day, aims to support the sector’s ongoing efforts to reduce its environmental impact and carbon emissions, and to strengthen its ability to adapt to a changing climate.

In May, G20 tourism ministers stressed the need to rethink tourism and create a more resilient, sustainable and inclusive sector. They have also committed to taking action and promoting such a green transformation. The UNWTO recommendations for the transition to a green travel and tourism economy, which were welcomed by the G20 tourism ministers, underscored the need to transform tourism activities for climate protection. Otherwise, emissions from global tourism could increase by at least 25% by 2030, according to the latest research by the UNWTO and ITF.

UNWTO Secretary General Zurab Pololikashvili said: “The pandemic and its impact on tourism, jobs and revenues are an unprecedented reminder of the need to rebalance our relationship with people, the planet and prosperity. The green transformation of the sector is required not only for the planet but also for tourism itself to increase competitiveness and increase resilience. “

The Global Survey is part of the preparations for the UN climate conference COP26 and the results will be presented in Glasgow in November 2021. It was developed as part of the One Planet Sustainable Tourism Program.

The survey runs until July 15, 2021 and destinations, companies and tourism associations are invited. You can find more information about the survey here
