USI volleyball cruises previous McKendree in three units

LEBANON, Ill. (WFIE) – Freshman Outside Hitter Abby Bednar (Chagrin Falls, Ohio) scored 14 kills, three aces, and seven digs as the University of Southern Indiana drove volleyball to a 25-19, 25-16, 25-23 Great Lakes Valley Conference win over hosts McKendree University on Saturday afternoon to the regular season sweep of the Bearcats.

Bednar scored six kills in the opening set to lead the Screaming Eagles, who took the lead 16-7 before settling on a nine-point win.

USI (13-9, 7-4 GLVC) hit 0.421 in a dominant nine-point win in the second set before winding up an 8-0 run during his two-point win in the crucial third frame.

In addition to Bednar, the Eagles got nine kills, an attack percentage of 0.643, and three blocks from junior middle hitters Taylor Litteken (Foristell, Missouri) plus nine kills and seven digs from his second year outside the hitter Leah Anderson (Bloomington, Illinois). Senior setter Casey Cepicky (St. Louis, Missouri) had 24 assists in less than two full sets of work while Senior Libero Callie Gubera (Thorntown, Indiana) and Freshman Outside Hitter Taya Dazey (Fort Wayne, Indiana) had 15 and 10 digs, respectively, to top the back row of USI. Gubera also had three aces in the win.

After nearly a month of absence, the Eagles return to the Screaming Eagles Arena on Friday at 7 p.m. to host William Jewell College. The game begins with a three-game home stand for USI, which will play five of their last seven games in their home arena.
