Leisure and sports travel support Dothan’s tax revenue as the government’s surplus grows.

“We’ve seen (travel) picking up speed, but the past two months have been tremendous,” said Aaron McCreight, President and CEO of Visit Dothan. “Most of the climb that we see is weekend specific, sport specific. Our weekends still exceed our day of the week, which is a difference of 180 degrees from two years ago. “

Visit Dothan, the city’s tourist office, has realigned its marketing strategy this year to attract more group sports tournaments to the region. McCright said 65 sports tournaments were booked for this year.

After a long time crammed in last summer, Dothan Mayor Mark Saliba said part of the reason the tax hikes are because people feel better when they are out and about.

“People are feeling better where we are at with the pandemic,” Saliba said. “I think over the course of the summer you will see enplanements rise and sales and lodging tax receipts continue to rise.”

For two-thirds of fiscal 2021, the city government raised approximately $ 55.5 million in sales and excise tax revenue. Just over $ 11.4 million of this is surplus or money raised beyond budget projections.

Last month, companies transferred $ 6.7 million to the city of Dothan, $ 1.3 million more than the amount Dothan raised last May. The amount was $ 1.87 million more than expected, according to budget projections.
