CONTRIBUTION A common merganser

Enjoy skip-the-line access to some of the waterfowl that migrate to Long Island Sound seasonally during the Winter Birding Cruises offered by the Maritime Aquarium in Norwalk.

These new cruises, tailored specifically for bird watchers, will seek out species such as long-tailed ducks, merganser, loons, scaup, buffleheads, and others – species that visit the Sound every winter but are difficult to appreciate at some distance from shore.

The 90-minute excursions are scheduled for February 27th, March 13th and March 27th. The departure time is 1 p.m.

“We added these cruises for bird watchers only because we found that a lot of the people who come out on our Seal-Spotting and Birding Cruises came out more to see the birds than to see the seals” said aquarium spokesman Dave Sigworth.

Cruises take place aboard the aquarium’s R / V Spirit of the Sound.

The ship has an air-conditioned cabin, but since the best visibility is outside on the deck, participants should dress for the weather. Special COVID precautions include wearing masks, reduced capacity on board and no binoculars included.

All passengers must be at least 42 inches tall. Guests under the age of 18 must be accompanied by a parent or legal guardian. Cruises depart from the dock in front of the aquarium’s former IMAX theater.

Tickets are $ 26.50 ($ 21.50 for aquarium members). Reservations are required by calling 203-852-0700 ext. 2206, on weekdays or at maritimeaquarium.org.
