KIHEI (HawaiiNewsNow) – As The Mayor of Maui is calling on airlines to voluntarily reduce the number of planes flying to the island, many business owners greet the crowd with open arms.

“Business is going great. We usually have long lines. But now we have extremely long lines. Customers from all over the world. It was wonderful, ”said David Yamashiro, co-founder and CEO of Ululanis Hawaiian Shave Ice.

The queue at Ululanis Hawaiian Shave Ice in Kihei stretched out onto the street on Wednesday afternoon.

Yamashiro said the visitor boom was exactly what his company needed.

“We’re beating 2019, so that’s good,” said Yamashiro.

More than 7,000 visitors flew to Valley Isle on Tuesday. Even some visitors are surprised by the thousands of tourists on the island.

“It’s a lot busier than we expected, even though people told us it was busy at the moment,” said Tami Kacevas, who is visiting from California. “We see that everything, even queues, are more, the beaches are really full, people are walking around, cars, the traffic is really bad.”

Kacevas said she agreed to the mayor’s request to reduce the number of travelers to the island.

“There are flights every 15 minutes or so. I think it should be something they can control a little. That’s a good idea, ”said Kacevas.

On the flip side, Yamashiro said the summer boom is helping small local businesses like his to make up for losses from the year they lost to the pandemic.

“I’m not sure what the effects will be, but I can’t imagine it’s any good,” he said. “It was really great for us and our employees.”
