The steel ceremony for the first of two LNG cruise ships for Princess Cruises took place last week. The steel was cut in San Giorgio di Nogaro (Udine) at the Centro Servizi Navali, which is responsible for the production of sheet metal for the Fincantieri shipyards in Italy. The ship will be built in the Monfalcone shipyard.

With 175,000 gross tons, the Sphere class ships will be the largest ships ever built in Italy. They will each accommodate around 4,300 guests and are based on a next-generation platform design. They are the first Princess Cruises ships to run mainly on LNG with dual fuel, which will significantly reduce CO2 emissions and the use of gas oil in shipping.

The order for the new ships was first announced in July 2018 and confirmed in March 2019.
