April 9, 2021 (Juneau, AK) – Alaska Governor Mike Dunleavy announced today in a press conference with local business owners of Wings Airways Hanger in Juneau an upcoming initiative to support our affected tourism, hospitality and ancillary businesses. The governor’s proposal to allocate resources to Alaskan businesses to save this year’s tourism season includes a major national tourism campaign, great relief for tourism communities and businesses, and a willingness to take legal action against the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention CDC) if the conditional sailing order is not canceled.

“We can’t wait for the federal government to act and support our tourism-dependent communities and businesses, especially those who come to Alaska by cruise ship. Alaska was expected to welcome 1.3 million tourists by cruise ship before the pandemic closed. The combined total economic loss from a canceled cruise ship season in 2020 and 2021 is $ 6 billion, with 2,180 companies at direct risk – many of them small family businesses. ” said Governor Dunleavy. “My government is taking the necessary steps to help the Alaskans. She is starting to create an aggressive aid package and is seriously considering taking legal action against the CDC if the Conditional Sailing Ordinance is not repealed. Our communities need our help now more than ever. “

Governor Dunleavy’s proposal to save Alaska’s 2021 tourism season includes:

  • Aggressive marketing campaign to lure Americans to Alaska
    • Direct federal COVID funding for one of the largest tourism campaigns in the state’s history.
  • Relief for businesses dependent on tourism
    • Direct COVID funds from the federal government to provide grants to tourism companies and create incentives for travelers.
  • Gather feedback from tourism-dependent communities
    • Lt. Governor Meyer and members of the Dunleavy administration will travel southeast, Denali, the Kenai Peninsula and the Mat-Su Valley to hear community groups about their needs and report the results to lawmakers.
  • Defend Alaska in court against federal cruise lines
    • The right to pursue litigation against the CDC’s Conditional Sailing Ordinance and ruthless disregard for the livelihoods and wellbeing of Alaskans is withheld.
  • Demand an End to the Passenger Vessel Services Act (PVSA)
    • Signed SJR 9and called on the United States Congress to exempt cruise lines from the PVSA for the period when Canadian ports are closed to cruise lines larger than 100 people.
