The Yeatman

Torel Palace Porto

Originally a mansion built in 1861, Torel Palace Porto is a well-preserved example of the architecture of this era, with its impressive skylight still intact and a high-gloss lobby with gilded edges. The peaceful outdoor pool is the perfect spot to retreat to after days exploring the city, not least for its selection of cooling cocktails.

The hotel celebrates all five senses at the Blind, its gastronomic temple named after the work of one of the country’s Nobel Prize winners. Inside, portraits of other Portuguese poets and writers are eulogized. Other notable artistic additions include bathrooms hidden in mirrored cubes in the middle of some bedrooms.

Its name may not be modest, but this neoclassical palace is actually quite monumental: it has high ceilings, gleaming white marble, and an Art Deco staircase for starters. Located on the equally stately Avenida dos Aliados, the 1923 building is close to the Clérigos Tower, Dom Luis 1 Bridge and Bolhao Market. There are three restaurants, all headed by an excellent French chef – of course there’s a fine dining restaurant, but there’s also a lively brasserie and a decadent cocktail bar.

This cozy hotel in Porto’s Santo Ildefonso district is less than 1 mile from Gaia’s wineries, including the Ferreira Cellars, in an old monastery and one of the best in the city. The six bedrooms captive house makes visitors feel like locals, with a garden pool, shared lounge, and elegant bedrooms, some with terraces that show off the surrounding terracotta roofs.

It’s close to the neighborhood’s eponymous church and Batalha Square, which was named after a battle but is much more civilized these days thanks to its cafes and monuments.

This boutique hotel between Avenida dos Aliados and Ribeira will take you back to 1829 when the paper warehouse was first opened in this location (hence the typewriters and various writing utensils). It later specialized in typography, bookbinding and carpentry and is one of the oldest stationery shops in Europe, run by the same family for five generations.

In the heart of Porto’s theater land (hence the name), PortoBay Theater confines jazz hands to the occasional spotlight and rush of a heavy curtain.

The star of the show is undoubtedly Il Basilico, which serves flavorful (and high-carb) pizzas, risottos, and pastas and has a glass ceiling for maximum natural light. Passersby can’t resist the smells from the pizza oven and luckily there is direct access from the street. More Italian imports come in the form of the house-made limoncello served at the bar, which opens onto the street for an indoor terrace feel that also draws locals.

Torel 1884 Suites & Apartments

Sister of Porto Torel Palace, and another alike sophisticated retreat in Lisbon, Thorel 1884 is another palatial apartment, now converted into 12 suites, on a modern downtown street. The late 19th-century building pays tribute to great Portuguese explorers in the form of exotic decor in the rooms, but the Bartolomeu Bistro celebrates the motherland (especially its wine).

In addition to reviving a historic artistic practice and ensuring it appeared in every room, the team ensured art was once again at the forefront of the hotel by hiring an artist to design the entrance. And it houses the coziest landing ever, which doubles as a library (with conveniently placed sofas).

Casa do Account & Typography

Each release of this dreamy duo – two objects 350 meters apart – from the same studio is equally artistic. Font fans will love one of the 19th-century buildings, which celebrate the written word by adorning walls with different typefaces (reproducing passages from different authors along with some simpler slogans), and design fans will enjoy the use of concrete antiques and light brown leather armchair.

Casa do Account & Typography is in artsy Cedofeita, but the town center is a 15-minute walk away, with a hammock-lined pool and peaceful courtyard that begs you to return quickly.
