A Michigan teenager was arrested after escaping a hotel in The Villages in his mother’s rental car.

The mother contacted law enforcement just before 9 a.m. Thursday to report that her white Nissan Pathfinder with New York license plates had been stolen from the Marriott TownePlace Suites in Spanish Springs, according to an arrest report from the Lady Lake Police Department. The Detroit woman told police that she was staying at the hotel with her husband and 17-year-old son.

A check of the hotel’s surveillance system showed that the teen got into the vehicle and left the parking lot around 10:30 p.m. on Wednesday. Later that night he was spotted by Kohl in the parking lot. When a Lady Lake policeman turned on the emergency lights on her patrol car and started chasing the rental SUV, the teen fled at high speed down Fennell Boulevard, drove over a curb, through a construction site, and then crashed into a barbed wire fence. He escaped from the scene of the accident on foot.

The teenager arrested at the hotel had fresh scratches and abrasions on both legs.

He was arrested on charges of escaping law enforcement and leaving the scene of the accident. He was a teenager at the time of his arrest but turned 18 on Saturday, September 11th.
