Norris volleyball coach Christina Boesiger invited the university players to breakfast on Saturday morning before their district volleyball final against Blair.

It has become a kind of tradition.

Part of the tradition, as the district finals usually take place in November, is a Christmas get-together where Boesiger hands out jewelry to each player.

Since this year’s district finale was before Halloween, Boesiger thought about holding back any Christmas cheers.

“Maisie (Boesiger) said there was no stopping the tradition,” said the coach. “We had our little Christmas breakfast in October.

“It’s fun and just a reward for being able to host a district. Everyone’s looking forward to it.”

The high-ranking Titans carry on a different tradition. After a dominant 25:12, 25: 5, 25:10 win over Blair in the B-1 final at Norris Middle School, they are going to the state tournament for the fourth time in a row.

Norris (33-2) left no doubt and took the lead with 8-1 and 15-6 in the first set and 10-1 in the second. Blair did not carry or forge a tie in any set.

The win included a 23-3 run in the second set, a run that was tough for Norris. The second Celia Spilker blocked a kill attempt to give Norris a 16-2 lead, and Maisie Boesiger jumped to the ground to start an Ella Waters dump kill.

“We played very disciplined in the second set and hardly made any mistakes,” said coach Bösiger. “They just came out and were pretty much mistake-free in the second set.

“Definitely a clean set for us.”

It was a very efficient game too.

Senior Sydney Jelinek had 13 kills out of 21 swings, Waters had 11 kills out of 21 attempts, and Junior Gracie Kircher had 11 kills out of 16 attempts. Norris had 16 aces and Maisie Boesiger had 33 assists.

Norris’ 33 wins are a school record, and the seniors have won four county championships, but the Titans, who finished runners-up at Omaha Skutt last year, know there’s a lot more to do. They are launched as the # 1 seed.

You will think about that soon enough. On Saturday, the Titans enjoyed winning another volleyball game with a Christmas spirit.

“We told them to enjoy the weekend and enjoy it, but somehow it starts all over again on Monday,” said coach Bösiger. “Everyone is back to 0-0 and nothing is really guaranteed. So I think the girls are going to enjoy their hard work.

“They have a lot to be proud of and look forward to, but they know they have many goals that they want to achieve.”
