Ireland could generate sales of up to 1 billion euros and employ another 50,000 people in the hospitality and tourism sectors again when it reopens the economy to overseas holidaymakers this summer, a group of experts told Tourism Minister Catherine Martin.

The government should start planning to resume open travel from the UK as early as July and later this summer with fully vaccinated American tourists, according to the Tourism Recovery Oversight Group. Martin will bring his report to the cabinet this week.

The Martin-appointed group, made up of government officials and tourism industry executives, said if Ireland did not reopen to inbound tourism by the third quarter, many businesses would continue to suffer or have none
