The Indian Sania Mirza and her American partner Rajeev Ram reached the mixed doubles quarterfinals of the Australian Open here on Sunday with a clear set victory over Ellen Perez and Matwe Middelkoop.

The unseeded Indo-American duo took an hour and 27 minutes to defeat Australia’s Perez and Dutchman Middelkoop 7-6 (8/6), 6-4 in their second-round clash on Court 3.

Mirza and Ram now meet the winners of another second round in the quarterfinals, all consisting of Australia between Sam Stosur and Matthew Ebden and Jaimee Fourlis and Jason Kubler.

Mirza and Ram prevailed against the Serbs Aleksandra Krunic and Nikola Cacic in the first round.

Earlier this week, six-time Grand Slam winner Mirza was eliminated in the first round of the women’s doubles tournament.

Mirza, who will retire after the 2022 season, is the only Indian still in contention in the first Grand Slam of the season after Rohan Bopanna and his Croatian partner Darija Jurak Schreiber won the mixed doubles in the first round on Saturday -Event had left.
