Thailand plans to reopen its borders to tourists to fully vaccinated people in mid-October Announcement by the Prime Minister.

“I know that there is a certain risk involved in this decision, because if we open the country there will be an increase in infections despite our good precautions,” said Prayuth Chan-ocha, Prime Minister of Thailand. “But I think when we consider people’s economic needs, it is time to take this calculated risk.”

The opening in mid-October is earlier than announced. Thailand should reopen in January 2022 but the tourism industry, which is a major contributor to the economy, is devastated

The prime minister said the government would only reconsider it if a serious situation develops. While the country is currently grappling with a spike in Covid cases, vaccines are on the way.

“To date, we have signed reservation and supply contracts for 105.5 million doses to be delivered this year, ahead of our target for vaccine deliveries,” he said. “According to our current plans, we will give an average of around 10 million shots per month from July, so that by the beginning of October almost 50 million people will have received at least their first vaccination.”

The reopening of tourism has already begun in some places. Phuket opens again to visitors who are fully vaccinated on July 1st.
