With more Americans traveling this summer, many are wondering how to safely navigate their summer plans with the emerging Delta variant. AAA has a few thoughts.

Is it safe to travel during the COVID-19 delta variant??

According to the CDC, fully vaccinated individuals can travel within the United States at low risk of developing the Delta variant. Those who remain unvaccinated are advised to postpone their trip. Not only is there a higher risk of illness, but many travel destinations require proof of vaccination.

That CDC recently changed its policy Recommended for travelers to wear a mask in areas with high COVID-19 transmission rates, whether or not you have been vaccinated.

Air travel: As the CDC notes, viruses and other germs do not circulate as easily on flights due to air filtration in airplanes. It is still the case that passengers wear masks. AAA recommends that passengers sign up for the TSA PreCheck to avoid the crowds at the airport.

Traveling with children: AAA suggests following CDC guidelines for unvaccinated individuals when it comes to traveling with children. Road trips are the easiest way to avoid large groups of people. Avoid crowded destinations, wear masks and if you have to fly try to get a direct flight. All children over the age of two must wear masks on flights.

Trips abroad: International travel is still a bit complicated at the moment. For this reason, AAA recommends that travelers work with a travel agent to make sure plans go smoothly.

The CDC strongly recommends travelers to fully vaccinate themselves before traveling abroad. Certain travel destinations require proof of vaccination and a negative COVID-19 test result three to five days prior to travel.

Delays in passport applications are no joke, on average the full processing takes 16 weeks. Expedited passport applications on average around 12 weeks. AAA recommends travelers to apply for a passport six months in advance of their travel plan.
