Many of them are self-described gourmets, he said, and are very close to nature. They also tend to be wine lovers, he said, citing studies.

“There’s a lot of discussion in California about foods containing cannabis as an ingredient,” he said.

David Yusefzadeh, the founder of Cloud Creamery in Massachusetts, said people want better quality edible cannabis too. Most of what’s on the market now is something close to candy, he said. Instead, cannabis can be an ingredient in its own right, not something hidden in sugar and gums.

He described a cannabis-infused sorbet made from local heirloom tomatoes and an entirely different model of cannabis consumption where visitors stay at a resort and enjoy a marijuana-infused brunch.

“You wouldn’t have to go anywhere after that,” he said.

He wasn’t surprised that party buses wouldn’t look attractive.

“I think most people don’t want to be on the move when they try something new and they’re not sure how that will affect them,” said Yusefzadeh. Instead, he said, they want a relaxing experience in nature, like eating on the beach.

He said he tried to convince all of his chef’s friends who are unemployed due to COVID-19 to think about cannabis. Most of the people who make food have no food background, he said.
