Another winter storm is on its way to Utah and will affect travel across the state this weekend for Presidents’ Day.

The storm is expected to arrive on Saturday morning between 5 a.m. and 6 a.m. with a mixture of rain and snow for the valleys and snow for the mountains. Snowfall in the mountains is likely to increase after 8 a.m.

FOX 13 meteorologist Allison Croghan advises extra caution if you are traveling on the weekend holiday and have to travel Saturday or Monday (especially along mountainous routes). Four-wheel drive, snow tires, and / or chains are always a good idea, and they are even needed in some Utah canyons during heavy snowfall. Please check the traction laws along the routes you are traveling on.

UDOT issued a road weather alert for the weekend. Click here for details.

On Sunday morning, the mountains in northern Utah can expect 6 to 12 inches of snow, while those in central Utah can see up to two feet.

Another storm is expected to arrive on Monday. The Cottonwood Canyons are expected to receive more than three feet of fresh snow by Tuesday. More storms will follow late next week. A very active weather pattern that is good news for our snowpack.

For backcountry adventurers, the risk of avalanches remains high this weekend. visit utahavalanchecenter.org for tips and resources.
