The head of the Secretariat for Tourism Development (Sefotur) Michelle Fridman Hirsch announced that the approval of an equal marriage in the Yucatán would have a greater economic impact and benefit the catering industry and the organization of social events, especially weddings.

As part of her appearance before the legislature as part of the analysis of the shine of the second government report by the executive branch, the state officials spoke openly about the positive indicators that LGBTQ + tourism is showing in different parts of the world.

The representative Milagros Romero Bastarrachea recalled that the State Congress had twice voted against an equal marriage and that there is a niche in the tourism market where the peninsula “with very good eyes” is intended for this type of ceremony.

With that in mind, the legislature asked what might be the estimate of events of this nature that might take place if marriage between people of the same sex is permitted, or otherwise, how much remains to be perceived.

Greater economic benefit

Fridman Hirsch, who has openly spoken out on sexual diversity rights, said it was important to highlight the World Travel and Tourism Council’s trends and indicators on the matter, although this was an issue outside of the gloss’s analysis.

He stated that such an organization believes that 10% of the tourist offer is in the LBGTQ + segment.

He also argued that the LGBTQ + community is one of the most spending sectors in terms of tourism. They belong to the DINK (Double Income No Kids) group, which in Spanish refers to couples with a double source of income and no children.

He also stated that it is a segment that represents a lot of economic income; In addition, it is well received by many travel destinations around the world such as Vancouver, Guadalajara, Puerto Vallarta and Cancun.

“This consent (that of equal marriage) would support the LGBT segment and the segment of weddings severely affected by the pandemic to be able to receive these types of ceremonies in our state,” he commented before the legislature from all parties.

The Supreme Court is analyzing the injunction
It should be noted that it issued its statement while the Nation’s Supreme Court (SCJN) was analyzing an injunction that could direct the State Congress to vote for the initiative again. since it is rejected, it is considered an act contrary to the political constitution of Mexico.
