Montavilla is a charming neighborhood in East Portland and has continued to develop over the past year with new alfresco dining alongside a variety of dining options. Eclectic shops and thrift stores all year round Farmers market, and the downtown walkable route make Montavilla a must-see on your next trip to Portland, just 6 miles from downtown Portland.

Opening October 2021, Sugar cream is a collaborative marketplace, pop-up incubator, and bakery-café all in one led by innovator Brittany Sigal, best known for the pop-up Portland Strawberry Museum in June 2021. The new space will sell baked goods, art, and treats inspired by seasonal activities, produce, and holidays. Don’t miss the autumn series “Pumpkin Spice and Everything Nice” from October 1st.

Sugar cream opens a block of Lazy Susanne, which was opened at the height of the pandemic (June 2020) by owner Earl Ninsom (Langbaan / Hat Yai) and culinary power couple Andrew Mace (formerly Le Pigeon and Han Oak) and pastry chef Nora Mace (formerly Tusk and Ava Gene’s). . This family-friendly charcoal grill restaurant and bar offers traditional meats and hand-made local products in a Covid-conscious space with al fresco dining and partially indoors, where take away brunch boxes during the week.

Opened in June 2021, the neighborhood’s first food truck – The Montavilla court – offers a varied culinary mix with black owners Erica’s soul food (southern cuisine), Vegan Taquiza (vegan Mexican street food),Little Bear (Vietnamese street food), Boba Palace (Poke Bowls and Bubble Tea) and more. Near Sebastianos, opened in June 2020 as a Sicilian-inspired deli with an emphasis on muffulettas and cannoli, with a food truck called Apertivo Sebastiano that lives right behind the deli with an expanded menu.

Neighbor Hungry heartuses local and seasonal ingredients for its decadent bakery and coffee offerings. All dishes are freshly prepared every day. The company is owned by Jax and Morgan Hart and owned by Queer and WOC. The bakery also has a small market with goods from their kitchen and other local food vendors. They are also working on a new Montavilla brunch restaurant, White Rabbit, which is slated to open in late 2021.

These new outposts are all the Montavilla staples in the neighborhood, including the family-run Middle East restaurant Ya Ha , the culinary anchor of the neighborhood – The observatory – and it’s next door 21+ Bar – Over and Out. Other favorites are Flying Pie Pizzeria known for its fresh, hand-rolled pizza dough, Tinker tavern which opened in October 2020 and is known for its to-go cocktails and Roscoes where you can order sushi from the bartender’s neighbor Miyamoto Sushi (it’s not on the menu, but it’s a known neighborhood secret).

A trip to Montavilla is not complete without browsing the female-owned boutique Union rose,and Ancient place in Monticello, a must for antique buyers visiting the city. But perhaps the neighborhood’s most famous anchor is Academy Theater, which opened in 1948 and serves excellent microbreweries, flying pie pizza or sushi from the Miyamoto area. Tickets are $ 4 per person for a second movie – and they offer babysitting for $ 9.50 (date night, anyone?).
